Sony Will Decide Whether Angry Birds Arrives on the PlayStation Vita

Angry Birds: Space is the game which will see Rovio breakout from the casual market and one of the main aims of the development team at Rovio is to get the same on as many devices as possible, including handhelds like the Sony-made PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS.

Initially, Space will be released on the Android and iOS powered devices and on the Mac and the PC.

Talking to Joystiq during the SXSW event, Peter Vesterbacka, who is one of the core leaders at Rovio, said that the company planned to get their new game on as many screens as possible, but that he was not yet sure what it could do on the PlayStatin Vita handheld.

He declared, “The Vita we haven’t decided what to do about yet, but of course we want to be on all the screens, so let’s see how the Vita does in the market.”

He added, “Of course, always when working with these console guys it’s not that we can decide, it’s really if Sony wants to have Angry Birds on Vita. It’s more up to them than to us.”

Vesterbacka also confirmed that it planned to launch the entire back catalog of Angry Birds video games to the 3DS handheld, although the company did not yet have a solid launch date in mind.

The PlayStation Vita has been marketed by Sony as being a gaming platform for the hardcore crowd, supporting experiences like Wipeout and Uncharted, which are heavy on graphics and have complex gameplay mechanics.

It’s not clear whether Sony is interested in getting a casual title like Angry Birds on its new handheld and whether the Rovio game will open up the way for other smaller titles with simpler mechanics.

Angry Birds Space will be launched on the PC, the Mac and the mobile devices on March 22.
